Riding to go XC skiing, sounds good, right? With the snow falling yesterday I decided to hit the singletrack for one last off road ride for who knows how long. Mistake. It was incredibly slippery, the inch of new snow just ripping off the frozen ground, treacherous to walk never mind ride. So I was flailing through the woods, riding my long travel bike that I don’t ride very often, and as I was doing a tricky little stream crossing I clipped a pedal. Hard. Got the no-warning ejection, straight into the oncoming shore. Looked back and the bike was sitting in the stream, my wrist hurt, my neck hurt, and I was pretty pissed. Once home I realized I’d rung my bell pretty hard and the rest of the day was a little gauzy, couldn’t really concentrate, focus, etc. I got my first concussion back in ’89 at the Haverhill Crit, that was a doozey, and I’ve had a few since then, though none as bad as the first one. This wasn’t quite a concussion, but it wasn’t fun either, and it felt good to wake up this morning and be able to read, carry on conversations, and all that.
