Child to Champion

The first time I shot Peter Sagan, who won the world road race championships yesterday, I think he was only 18 years old. Nobody noticed him that year at training camp, he was so quiet. He spoke no English and only a little bit of Italian, so he couldn’t communicate with anyone on the team, really. He wore his hair short, in the Eastern European way of the ’90s, and had no style to speak of. And then he started winning. A lot. And it seemed inevitable he would win really big races. I took this after the team’s Paris-Roubaix pre-ride in 2010, when he was still anonymous. Those days are well and truly over, now.
